The Housing & Development Board celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. When HDB was first established, many families lived in crowded, squalid conditions. The HDB hit the ground running, to build homes for Singaporeans.

The HDB’s new book, “Home, Truly”, takes a look at their design and planning process over the past 60 years, as well as their ideas for new estates like Bidadari and Tengah. You can read the e-book here: www.go.gov.sg/HDBHomeTruly

Eight in 10 Singaporeans now live in an HDB flat. Each new generation has brought different needs, lifestyles and aspirations, and the HDB has continued to innovate and adapt with them. Today, HDB focusses on building community-centric towns, paying special attention to sustainability.

What makes a house a home? It is more than four walls, and a space to rest your head at night. It is a space for us to live, play and – as many of us found this year – to work. This is why the HDB’s work is so important, and I am glad they continue to challenge themselves. I’m sure many of you have a favourite part of your neighbourhood; do share them below! Let’s congratulate HDB on their 60th anniversary! – LHL
